An interpreter must be more than just bilingual. She must have a working knowledge of both languages because there is no opportunity to look a word up in a dictionary or ask a speaker to explain what was meant.

An interpreter must have subject language expertise.  This does not necessarily mean a legal interpreter must have a law degree, but it would certainly help!  Professional interpreters gain subject language expertise through courses, formal professional development or self-study.

An interpreter must also be a professional, arrive on time and prepared to work. You can help by providing background material, company brochures, PowerPoint slides, articles, anything that will be discussed during the meeting or event for which interpreting is needed.
